I have this summer again had one of those pivotal moments where through my reading a deeper understanding of a particular aspect of my topic has emerged. Pursuing moral philosophy has been a challenge but extremely rewarding, personally and academically.
With my new understanding of utilitarianism, deontology and virtue ethics, I then revisited a chapter written by Gunilla Dahlberg and Peter Moss (the Ethics chapter in Ethics and politics in Early Childhood (2005)) that was too complicated for me 10-12 years ago when I first read it. I am in the process of unpicking it and why I have a couple of reservations with their argument. They are criticising normative concepts in early childhood, yet my understanding is that they promote a virtuous perspective that however can be seen as no less normative.
