Summary of Learning Circle by Helen Lyndon
The focus of today’s session was writing for publication and some of the EECERA trustees were on hand to offer some sage advice…
When considering writing to a brief
Present ideas to friends first, gain different perspectives, take ideas to conferences
Visualise the wine glass; start broad with your ideas and then narrow in to focus
Add the structure, use subheadings and plan the contents
Consider the grand narrative and then ask yourself- how will I tell this story?
Ask yourself ‘What do I believe about this?’ and then ‘What have I done about this?’ to ensure it is based on praxis
Stop and think what you think
Always ask yourself how you have included your views – ‘situate yourself in a world of values’
Avoiding procrastination
Take yourself away from distracting environments
Positive reinforcement – how will you treat yourself after the next section?
Achieve something, even if its bibliography or formatting
Tell others your goals
Start with a ‘blurt’ and then add the scholarly materials
List what is left to do
Viva advice
It’s exciting – you get to talk about your work for people who have read all of it
Remember those sub headings – answer briefly at first and ask if they need more detail
Tabs and post it notes to help you navigate on the day
