It was great to have a full team meeting - Chris, Tony and Eleni :)
It was exciting to discuss the first draft of my Literature Review Chapter:
CP felt is should more clearly, in the final section, mention how I will use the various theories in relation to MY particular study
CP also suggested bringing out more clearly past research in the literature reviewed. What do we know about how children’s rights are used/interpreted in practice
I also need to go back and use same search criteria to update the literature review
I should make more signposts to what will be discussed further in other chapters
Interestingly EP wanted to know why I had structure the review the way I had. I said it was to be systematic and building on Walker and Avant’s levels of theory construction. I could in the moment not think of how else I could possibly have structured it. Later in the conversation, as Eleni and I were talking about the 3P’s, she suggested it could maybe have been structure under these 3 themes. I said I did not think so, as I would have had to go over the 5 theory levels under each P, and I felt that would have been “messy” ... Eleni would like an explanation in the introduction to the chapter justifying my way of structuring the chapter, maybe in section 2.2 explain my systematic structure as a way of being transparent, creating an audit trail as an aspect or rigour and also to be consistent … methodological and pragmatic reasons … the chapter has in effect two structures, the theoretical framing in line with Walker and Avant and the methodological for rigour but I need to explain why I did it this way
CP felt I have 2 controversial points: My critique of Dahlberg and Moss that I need to be prepared to defend, and my discussion on pedagogy drawing on Miller. The question is: does the discussion add anything to my argument or should I leave it out as it is possibly contentious
I also mentioned the positive experience I have had when working with Professor Beth Swadener on the chapter for the Routledge book on children’s rights.
Regarding the Article I withdrew, I suggested it could possibility be the first chapter in an edited book on working with children’s rights in early childhood, for the EECERA book series … that I would be happy to edit, after submitting my thesis, which is my priority now!
